Forbes: Having a Bad Mel Day

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

There have been so many stones thrown at Mel Gibson it was refreshing to see an article written by someone who can acknowledge her own propensity to real shout-it-out anger. There is an excellent explanation about how the brain gets into overload, called flooding, and the result is the screaming and panting that you can hear on the Mel tapes. Read the article and my comment to help gain some perspective past the media noise.

Using the Planet Wisely

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

How long do you think it will take before we stop drinking beer and soda pop from cans? Don’t even think about the answer. Rather, think about how the cans can be used, recycled, redistributed, and redone.

This fabulous pocketbook is the brainchild of Brazilian artist Neide Ambrosio. It caust my eye in a global travel magazine and I kept it in a folder so I could order it, and also write about it.

Leadership comes in so many ways. Artists often are at the forefront of change. I looked at the handbag and wondered why I could never be that clever.

Workplace Conflict and Father’s Day

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Hope all of you dads had a play day yesterday; and, even more importantly, that you were recognized and appreciated.

If you are an older dad, did you live in the “no guilt” zone? Or were there memories of missed little league games, missed school plays, missed opportunities to talk, really talk with the kids?

Leadership Challenges: I’m Sorry, I Messed Up!

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

I just saw a news bulletin that BP apologized for its mess. Certainly took long enough. Yet, there are so many who need to apologize, including Halliburton and other subcontractors.

In any case, apologies do help when they are made with the intention of setting things right. We will see how big oil does in the days to come.

Total Leadership Connections

Monday, June 7th, 2010

This week we are starting our 45th program of “Total Leadership Connections“. It is so much fun to watch the competent leaders who go through this unique program take their skills to new levels.

We have found that once there is an understanding of the 13 most common behavior patterns seen in all workplaces it changes the way you think of yourself and those with whom you work in your present organization, be it a large coproration, family business, or entrepreneurial start up.

When Leaders Connect

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Last night I was a guest on The Doug Noll Show. At first blush we would look highly dissimilar from our backgrounds. Doug was a trial lawyer, you know my side wins, your side loses.

Yet somewhere, at a crossroads, he took a different turn. All of his leadership development as a successful lawyer was not enough to satisfy. He came to the decisions that his clients are better served when they work together rather than apart.

Well, It’s Wedneday. “So what“, you say? Or “UGGGG“, you say. Or “no biggie.”

Response to Tiger’s New Ad

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

I wonder what Tiger’s dad was really talking about, certainly not his son’s sexual conduct, probably his golf swing! This is a blatant misuse of a dead man’s comments. Tiger, stands there looking like a dead man walking.

What are we to learn from watching this ad other than to see how far we, as a culture, have fallen in bad taste.

Kindness at Work

Monday, March 29th, 2010

What if we spent more time looking for role models of kindness and altruism and less time looking at ego driven reality show folks who are all about me, me, me. What if in leadership development programs, team enhancement seminars, life coaching, executive coaching, and conflict resolution workshops we stopped looking at what doesn’t work and started to look at what does work. Would we all be the better for it?

Celebrities and the Cult of Too Muchness

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Corey Haim, starred in a film called “Lost Boys”. The title, so prophetic, gives us pause to consider what we are doing, and that means all of us, to help kids grow into joyful, creative, and competent adults.

His friends are doing what friends do, looking for reasons and who to blame. There are plenty of places to point fingers. Corey Feldman, a good childhood pal and actor pointed toward Hollywood, stating it needs to take better care of child celebrities.
