If you're new here, you may want to subscribe receive blog updates. Thanks for visiting!

This is a time to really, really look at the meaning of success, of relationship, and in honor of the Fourth of July, of freedom.

Please go to Examiner.com where I am a writer and check out the blog I did about Jon Gosselin who is in our Total leadership Connections program. Jon lives in Pa. and has been on the reality series “Jon and Kate Plus Eight” where we all had the opportunity to watch sextuplet and twin Gosselins grow and flourish.

“HMD” to All Women and Men Who Have Birthed Anything

Friday, May 7th, 2010

A female executive I am coaching called me very early this morning and complained about how hard Sunday would be for her. My response was not super professional; all I said was “Huh?”

She then launched into a soliloquy about the fact that she had made a conscious decision not to have children and every Mother’s Day she had tons of people who would look at her with sad expressions and either ignore the whole idea that she was childless or make banal comments about overpopulation or the fact that many people have children who drive them crazy.

The Boy Who Became St. Patrick

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

I’ll bet you see more people of every denomination wearing a bit of green today. Well, maybe the same color will be well represented on Earth Day. In any case, St. Patrick’s Day is known for parades, beer and lots of fun.

I did some research to find out who is the man behind the myth and there are quite a few interesting facts. At the age of 16 he was kidnapped by a band of pirates from his native land of the Roman British Isles and sold into slavery.

Valentines for Moms

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

An important part of what we teach in our Total Leadership Connections Program is that it is an illusion to think we can separate who we are at home from who we are at work. That split causes a multitude of emotional and even physical issues for lots of people.

Even more, we teach that what we do in our present work organization is most definitely based on what we learned in our original organization – the family.

Leadership and Pattern Awareness

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

I spent some time during the holidays checking out how people either crave new situations, or are almost addicted to repeating patterns from the past – New Year’s Eve is a perfect example. We were on a plane from San Francisco to Albuquerque. I could feel a sense of anticipation as we walked through the mostly empty concourse on our way to the car.

As we moved from passenger only, to the meet and greet side, I heard a lovely woman greet her husband? lover? With “I was afraid you would not get here till after the New Year started.” They still had half an hour till the bells would toll and fireworks began. I wondered if this could really make a difference for their relationship.
Then I noticed I was getting anxious. Our luggage was first off and we got the car quickly. Yet, we still would have been too late for the global peace meditation we wanted to join. So, we got in the car for the hour drive to our home outside of Santa Fe.

Interesting how patterns work. At ten before the witching hour of twelve, we started the countdown.  And as the few early fireworks began to light the sky with the full blue moon as background, we pulled over to the side of the road for the hearty ritual of a goodbye kiss to 2009 and a welcoming glad you are here kiss for 2010. It felt good, and in some far corner of my mind, it really did make a difference.

Elegant Leadership

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

I am so delighted to introduce you to my new blog “Elegant Leadership” that will be posted at http://blog.ceoptions.com/ after the New Year. Since I love to write I will have a more personal blog at www.sylvialafair.com to include thoughts and ideas about relationships, health, and education, as well as business.

Elegant Leadership will include all my newest research concerning leadership. I will suggest the best books, articles, and unique individuals I can find to help you on the difficult daily journey of being the best leader you can be.

Why did I choose the title “elegant leadership”? I honestly think it chose me. I woke up with the term, like a drum beat, repeating over and over in my head. Maybe I had a dream about it, not sure. All I know is,  I love the word “elegant” as it is used in scientific realms. In nature elegant signifies finding the simplest and most precise way of responding.

Holiday Stress and Leadership Involvement

Monday, December 7th, 2009

This week is the beginning of the fast track to the holidays. Everyone, no matter what their religious persuasion, is impacted by the bustle, the songs, the red and green decorations, the deep desire for holiday cheer and the disappointment if the dreams and hopes don’t measure up to the realities.

What to do? First, it is important to breathe! Yes, this is simple, inexpensive, and possible at any moment of the day. Deep breathing is better than cookies, wine, and even a new shiny car.  Here is what to do: find a quiet place; even if you go into the bathroom and lock the door for five minutes. Keep your feet on the floor and hands on your lap. Then close your eyes. Take a long deep breath through your mouth and then exhale quickly and forcefully through your mouth. Do this at least 7 times and then sit for a moment to let the oxygen stream through your body.

Dare to Vacate

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

vacation_time_see_you_sept_2These few weeks before Labor Day are the ones that scream out “STOP”. This is the end point before the next beginning. This is the last of those lazy days before the autumn surge. School soon moves into high gear. Work takes on a more intense flavor, executive leadership programs, business seminars, conferences are all fighting for our attention.

Have you taken a vacation this summer? Have you taken the time to sit and stare…at the ocean or pine trees or slot machines? Whatever makes you stop thinking for even a brief time is what really matters. The root of the word vacation is to vacate, make empty.

We all need time to stop the mind from moving into fast forward. The most common way is to do something, anything that is not the norm, not the pattern. We all need to create a pattern interrupt scenario for ourselves. That is how we can think new thoughts and gather new ideas.

Remembering on Memorial Day

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

When Danny stood at the grave site of his brother he was angry and still in shock. Neil had been a victim of a stray bullet. No he was not in uniform fighting for his country. He was a teen walking down the street in Chicago three months ago.

Alexa’s father cannot forgive. His daughter was killed by a drunk driver last year. The ugly crash that took his seven year old child’s life happened over Memorial weekend.
