Leadership in the 21st century is truly a team activity. It really does take a group of committed people to make positive change happen. So team collaboration is the best way forward.
On the other hand, each individual contributor must be seen in his or her own right as the one and only one who makes the whole team fly or fail.

Yesterday I received a call from a man who sounded super angry and incredibly tired. He said he was ready to close his very fiscally sound family carpet business because he could not stand the fighting anymore.
“Who are you fighting with? I asked. “Oh, not me, I stay out of the fray, it’s everyone else.” “Hummmm” I said.

There was an excellent article by renowned leadership expert Michael Maccoby in the Washington Post about the upside and downside of “stretch goals”.
The Olympics, a perfect example of watc hing individuals and teams push themselves, motivated by the desire to achieve greatness. What Maccoby suggested is that we need to look at the fine line between going toward a vision that is possible and one that can ultimately turn sour.

The following video has gone viral and is lots of fun to watch. It teaches some good lessons about the “first follower” as a leader. These early adapters are visionaries in their own right, and help make a movement happen.
In the video, we are talking about dancing at the beach: lots of fun and freedom and spontaneity. I would like to present a question and would love responses from all who are thinking about the ethics of followership.

Months ago I posted a blog on why women are so unhappy at work. I am still getting responses, even though most “older blogs” are put out to pasture by the end of the day they are conceived and birthed.
I have been thinking about why there is so much gloom and doom about getting up in the morning, going to a place where we are being asked to roll up our sleeves, produce and create, and then go home for an evening of feeling full and having been useful.

Elegant Leadership will include all my newest research concerning leadership. I will suggest the best books, articles, and unique individuals I can find to help you on the difficult daily journey of being the best leader you can be.
Why did I choose the title “elegant leadership”? I honestly think it chose me. I woke up with the term, like a drum beat, repeating over and over in my head. Maybe I had a dream about it, not sure. All I know is, I love the word “elegant” as it is used in scientific realms. In nature elegant signifies finding the simplest and most precise way of responding.

This end of the first decade of Century 21 is a time of searching more deeply for leadership skills that go beyond simple cookbook “become a great leader in one minute” solutions.
General Electric Chairman and CEO, Jeff Immelt, offered some great suggestions in his speech at the West Point Distinguished Leader Series. What struck me was his comment that we “must become systems thinkers who are comfortable with ambiguity”. You can read the entire speech at the GE web site.

What happens when you feel the world is closing in and you just have nothing left to give? What do you do when the tensions and stress of daily life seem to escalate rather than subside? What happens when you feel like you are driving on empty?
Most of us retreat. We find a way to avoid difficult situations and zone out by watching T.V. or starting a big fat book filled with Sudoku challenges. If this sounds like you, listen up! There is a new study by Leadership IQ that says 66% of employees say they have little interaction with their boss, and that is a turn off.

When you think of leadership, what are the key words that come to mind?
Most will make a list that includes: Powerful, Capable, Confident, Ambitious, Risk Taker, Effective, Charismatic, and so on.
The discussion continues on blogs and in articles about what constitutes effective leadership, what we need to include in effective leadership training, and what to look for in mentors, coaches, and managers who can qualify as leaders of choice.
